Overview & Descriptions

The FWB Fellowship is an intensive and challenging program designed to help both you and your students get the most out of your year-long placement. Our goal is to provide the necessary structure, support, and pacing to ensure that you discover new people and places and are able to utilize the creative process to truly connect with your new community. From week to week, you’ll be asked to submit a variety of different items every Sunday. The specific content of these submissions will vary depending on the particular phase of the FWB Fellowship, but all Fellows should expect to submit photos, video footage, and survey responses on a weekly basis for the duration of the program.

WEEKLY VIDEOS

Throughout your time abroad, you’ll be asked to submit a new video submission on a weekly basis. Depending on the phase of the program you are in, the guidelines of the video submission may vary a bit.  You are welcome to use any equipment included in the FWB Equipment Package to complete each video. Each week, you’ll receive written feedback on your submission. Export Settings

FAQs

  • Q: How many hours per day should I devote to communication and shooting/editing every day?
  • A: On average, Fellows should expect to spend 1-2 hours/day (outside of their teaching hours) working on their various film/photo submissions and completing their required surveys.
  • Q: Can I complete my short films at a different time?
  • A: The goal of the short films is to provide Fellows with a framework for connecting with their local communities (and to showcase the lived experience of community members) through the creative process. While it may be tempting to hold out for a specific short film topic or event (seasonal festival, upcoming trip, etc.), Fellows will need to complete the short films within the prescribed time frame regardless of outside scheduling factors. It’s advisable to have a locally based back-up plan in case a key interview falls through or a collaborator drops out. Fellows should begin to arrange their short documentary and narrative films shortly after arrival in country.
  • Q: Can I have an extension?
  • A: While we would love to give you as much time as you need to complete your various surveys and submit your weekly videos/footage, all Fellows are required to adhere to the weekly submission schedule. The schedule is rigorous by design and aims to provide the necessary pacing to ensure that all Fellows emerge from the FWB Fellowship with a dynamic body of work.
  • Q: What if I don’t have internet access? How do I submit?
  • A: In the event that you are unable to submit any element of the weekly submissions due to internet access/power outages/etc., you can provide your responses and submissions the next day once the internet has been restored.
  • Q: Can I film a bunch of footage at once and then submit edited 3-5 minute sequences from that same footage over various weeks?
  • A: Absolutely! In fact, this is encouraged. As you work on your short films and your feature film, you will inevitably have opportunities to film large chunks of footage. Feel free to then edit 3-5 minute sequences from that same footage and submit it for feedback over the next few weeks etc.
  • Q: What should I do if I have technical difficulties?
  • A: In the event that you have technical difficulties, flag the issue in your Weekly Film Report and a member of the FWB Team will follow up and help you out.
  • Q: What if my Fellowship lasts for less than 1 year (52 weeks)? What do I do?
  • A: In the event that your Fellowship is ~ 10 months (an academic year), you should still plan on completing all of the Phase 2 films. All Fellows, regardless of timetable, should plan on filming/editing/finalizing all of their short film projects before the end of their Fellowship.

For each of the items listed below, please film multiple short clips (e.g. 5-10 seconds each totaling 60 secs per item) of the individual piece of equipment in use either in your classroom or by your students in another environment. Using the DLSR (1080p), please film a variety of shots (e.g. ECU, CU, Medium, LS, etc.) of the equipment in action and then export the footage back-to-back and upload/share via GDrive. The more smiling student faces and versatile uses of the equipment, the better.

COMING UP SOON: Start thinking about your short film topic. In Week 15, you’ll be asked to submit a 1 page treatment for your film. It’s important to remember that both of your short films should be filmed/produced in your own backyard/your local community (e.g. within a 15 minute walk from your housing/school) and should be achievable in terms of logistics/scale (you should choose a topic that can be easily filmed as part of your daily routine and not something that requires travel of special circumstances). Consider how you will be able to shoot/edit/upload a completed short film within the given timeframe and ensure that you choose a local subject/topic that is achievable.
